Nobel Square

Statues at the Waterfront

Opened in December 2005 Nobel square celebrates Nkosi Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former State President FW de Klerk and former President Nelson Mandela, South Africa`s four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The larger-than-life bronze statues of the four were crafted by internationally acclaimed sculptor Claudette Schreuders,

The idea for the square was conceived by Ebrahim Rasool, Premier of Western Cape from 2004 to 2008, and his predecessor Marthinus van Schalkwyk. The project was launched after consultations with Lutuli’s family and the other Prize winners who were still alive at the time
