Macassar water park

Abandoned waterpark

The former glory of the Macassar Waterpark makes for some photogenic scenes on the beach. The Water park was built on the edge of the Macassar Dunes nature reserve in 1991. The nature reserve covers 2760 acres and it is one of the highest and biggest dune systems in the Cape. However, nature was the downfall of the park. The adjacent dunes crept gradually onto the site. The sand moved by the wind made the battle of continually clearing sand from the facilities at the pavilion too onerous and the owners gave up the battle. Sand is piled up everywhere from the ticket office to the swimming pools and the slides.
