Jacob’s Ladder

Mountainside staircase in St James

Jacob’s Ladder in Kalk Bay is a stone staircase ascending from Main Road to Boyes Drive. The 334-step staircase was built in the 1890s and is carved from local granite. The staircase makes a good whale-watching site. A whaling station was close by and was operational until whaling was banned in the mid-1800s. There was also a row of cottages for the mariners/ whalers. One of these cottages is still standing.
