Heuningberg Nature Reserve
The Bredasdorp Mountain Reserve, also known as the Heuningberg Nature Reserve, is an 800-hectare protected area on the southern edge of Bredasdorp. Rising to 386 metres above sea level, it offers wide-ranging views over the town and the surrounding landscape. The reserve is open all year from sunrise to sunset and does not provide accommodation, although campsites and other lodging options are available in Bredasdorp.
The reserve features a network of contour paths and nature trails across coastal bush and montane fynbos. It supports more than 260 plant species, including 34 endemics. Notable plants include the trident pincushion and the Bredasdorp lily (Cyrtanthus guthrieae), which flowers in March and April and occurs only on Heuningberg Mountain. Proteas, ericas, serrurias, and several orchid species are also found here. The Reserve more than rewards visitors who wander the paths. There are two hiking trails, one, the white route and the other, the yellow route. On these trails, you will see interesting rock formations and kloofs, and you will be able to see incredible views over Bredasdorp and further as far as Arniston, De Hoop Nature Reserve, and Struisbaai
Small mammals occur in the reserve, along with fynbos-associated bird species such as Cape sugarbirds, lesser double-collared sunbirds, malachite sunbirds, and orange-breasted sunbirds. On clear days, the summit provides views east towards Arniston and De Hoop, south to Struisbaai and the Soetanysberg, southwest to Elim, and north across the Rûens to the Riviersonderend Mountains..
