Greenmarket square
Greenmarket Square is a square in the centre of old Cape Town. The square was built in 1696, when a burgher watch house was built. The square has served as a slave market, a vegetable market. The market developed early on when the VOC brought vegetables from its adjoining garden for sale to Cape Town residents. Farmers and freed slaves soon began bringing their produce here in wagons and carts.
More recently, a flea market has been set up, trading mainly African souvenirs, crafts, and African art, clothing, jewellery, and curios.
