Gardens at Vergelegen
In 1700, Governor William Adriaan van der Stel took up residence in the Cape. He named his piece of land “Vergelegen” – which translates to “far away” from the bustle of Cape Town’s city centre. It took a full day of travel for visitors from Cape Town to visit van der Stel’s homestead.
Vergelegen is a Provincial Heritage Site. There are 18 themed gardens around the estate, which are open to the public. You can walk at your own pace or be guided by a knowledgeable gardener. The gardens are in a beautiful setting, with views of the surrounding mountains. Willem Adriaan van der Stel, when Governor of the Cape, began the garden in 1700. He developed the vineyards. He also laid out the Octagonal Garden with alabaster urns, giant trees, and herbaceous borders. The White Garden has ponds, bulbs, herbs, and a lavender walk. There is also a Wetland Garden, a Rose Garden, and a Yellowood Walk.
The tour includes visits to the 200-year-old Library that houses a cataloged collection of 4500 books. The 300-year-old Cape Dutch Homestead was refurbished to reflect the layered histories. Some trees of significance including the majestic Camphor Trees that were declared National Monuments in 1942;
