Joe Slovo Park was named after the anti-apartheid activist who became the minister of housing in the ANC led government after 1994. It is a small township which began in 2006 as an orderly working-class suburb. The planners aimed to replace the shack dwellings in the area with RDP (reconstruction and development programme) houses. However, more shacks have been constructed around the houses and the area is now indistinguishable from an informal settlement.
