Golf Courses in the Karoo

Despite the harsh conditions in the Karoo, intrepid golfers have built some very fine courses. Prince Albert Golf Course was constructed by keen players in 1928.  The fairways on the course consist of earth and grit and the greens are made from sand and oil. Laingsberg has a very fine golf course where good weather is usually guaranteed. The course in Oudtshoorn is the only 18-hole course in the Western Cape north of the Outeniqua mountains. The original course was built in 1922 but was relocated to its present position in 1957.

West Coast Golf Courses

The courses around the West Coast are varied and challenging. There are 9-hole and 18-hole courses available. Darling Golf Club has an excellent bar and catering facilities available for private and corporate functions. Mooreesburg is an interesting course offering 9 holes that can be played and is inexpensive for visitors. Lamberts Bay boasts 2 clubs. One is a public/municipal course, and there is also Xamarin Golf Club, where zebra can sometimes be seen grazing on the fairways.

Garden Route

Fancourt Estate is one of the most beautiful golfing resorts in the world. It stands as the premier destination in the Western Cape. Fancourt is widely considered the best in South Africa. Its flagship Links course, designed by Gary Player, consistently ranks top nationally and has hosted major international tournaments. Located along the scenic Garden Route between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Fancourt offers three world-class courses: the Links, Montagu, and Outeniqua.

The Links course meets the highest international standards and offers a challenging experience for avid golfers. The Montagu course has rolling fairways and strategic bunkers, providing a memorable challenge for even the most seasoned players. Meanwhile, the Outeniqua course, a parkland layout, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests for those seeking a spectacular golfing experience.

Also along the Garden Route is the Pezula Golf Club. This club is situated atop a massive bluff overlooking both the rugged coastline and the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon

Pinnacle Point Golf Club. is likely the most visited club, known for its breathtaking views along the cliffs. Its spectacular landscapes attract numerous golfers, although its challenging layout prioritizes scenery over playability.

The Western Cape also boasts notable courses by prominent architects.  Arabella and De Zalze were designed by Peter Matkovic. Fancourt and others by Gary Player have all achieved high acclaim.
