Tips for Road Trips

A road trip is one of the best ways to enjoy authentic local experiences. You have the freedom to explore at your own pace, find hidden gems, and support small local businesses along the way.

 Check the car

  • Have your car serviced before you leave, including a full tyre check. Make sure your spare tyre is in good condition.

Packing

  • Pack an emergency bag with a blanket, first aid kit, torch, and other basics.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, preferably locked in the boot/trunk.
  • Take chargers, adaptors, and enough snacks and drinks for the road.

 Planning Your Route

  • Update your GPS before you set off, but carry a paper map as backup.
  • Check the weather forecast and be aware of possible seasonal closures.
  • Plan to travel outside peak traffic times. Pack the night before and get a good night’s sleep before you go.
  • Fill up with petrol ahead of time.

On the Road

  • Stop regularly to rest, stretch, and keep your circulation going.
  • Take regular breaks and take the chance to support local small businesses, there are so many great farmstall/padstaal stops along the way. Have great coffee, something to eat and meet some interesting locals.
  • Stop to enjoy the scenery and take pictures, but always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never drink and drive. Use the hands-free option if you need to use your phone, and do not text and drive
  • Don’t overpack, but be prepared. Check the weather forecast.

Off-season savings

  • Consider booking out of season for better rates, value for money, and fewer crowds.
  • Midweek bookings can also save you money.

A well-prepared road trip isn’t just about the destination. It’s about the freedom to explore, the chance to support local communities,
