Mountains encircle Elgin, and it therefore has a cooler climate. It has been apple country for many years and has recently branched into viticulture. The vineyards are between 300 and 500 metres above sea level. The signature wines are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. it is one of the smaller regions, but the area produces quality wines. The region is part of the Koggelberg biosphere reserve, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it lies at the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
