Nyanga is Xhosa for moon and is one of the oldest black townships in Cape Town. It was established and proclaimed as a township in 1946. It was established as a result of the migrant labour system. A space for settlement was required when Langa became overcrowded. While Nyanga is a mostly made up of informal shacks and it is a poverty-stricken and dangerous space, it has a true township atmosphere and is full of energy and colour.
