The name Mouille is French for anchoring ground

The name Mouille is French for anchoring ground. Many ships ran aground here in the early 1700s and the then-governor decided that a Mouille (breakwater) would help protect ships at anchor. The task began in 1743 when farmers, having delivered goods to the city, had to load up their wagons with stones and haul them off to Mouille Point. Slaves and prisoners worked on the project but after 3 years of labouring only 100 metres had been completed and the project was abandoned due to high seas making it untenable. The French arrived in 1781 and they built a battery near the unsuccessful Mouille but still called this Mouille Point Battery.

A small suburb indeed

Mouille Point consists only of two roads and a lighthouse which was called Mouille Point lighthouse it was built in 1842 and was dismantled in the 1920s. The current lighthouse in Mouille Point is called Green Point Lighthouse because of the tradition that a new lighthouse cannot take the same name as an old one.
