The Olifants River Bridge
Bridge near Klawer
The Olifants River bridge is an arch style construction over the Olifants River, which was constructed in the early 1950s. This bridge had steadily deteriorated over time. The original bridge is narrow, and the widening of the road caused a bottleneck. A design was approved for a new bridge alongside the old one to increase traffic capacity. Challenges associated with the design included plans to ensure minimal maintenance, aesthetics, and span. Eventually, the design included an arch with a continuous deck of 165 metres. The bridge was completed in 1983.
