The Bloukrans River Bridge

The Bloukrans River Bridge is an arch bridge over the Bloukrans River, which forms the border between the Eastern and Western Cape. Construction by Concor began in 1980 and was completed in June 1983. The bridge is 451 m long, with a central span of 272 m, and stands 216 m above the river. When completed, it was the world’s highest concrete-arch bridge. It has since been surpassed by the Jiangjiehe Bridge in China, but remains Africa’s highest bridge.

In 1997, Face Adrenalin established the Bloukrans Bridge Bungy, which became the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee and turned the bridge into an international adventure attraction. Visitors can also cross beneath the arch on the Flying Fox cable slide or take a walking tour.

The bridge has been the setting for several bungee-jumping records. In 2002, Bill Boshoff completed 101 jumps in 14 hours, while Veronica Dean-Boshoff completed 19 jumps in one hour. On 6 April 2010, 96-year-old Mohr Keet became the oldest person to complete a bungee jump, earning a Guinness World Record. On 11 May 2011, Scott Huntly completed 107 jumps in a single day while raising funds for local causes.
