Strandfontein beach

Long beach on the False bay coast

Strandfontein False Bay, not to be confused with Strandfontein on the West Coast

Strandfontein Beach, close to Mitchell’s Plain, is a Blue Flag Beach that is long, fairly flat, open and backed by dunes. There is good fishing to be had here, as well as mussel collecting and crayfish catching. There are masses of rockpools to explore. It is not advisable to walk alone on the beach; it is better to stay in a group, as there are long deserted stretches. The tidal Pool, the Strandfontein Pavilion, and the Amphitheatre are popular. Strandfontein has the largest tidal swimming pool in Southern Africa, and it was a movie location for the Free Willy film series.

Beach swimming is relatively safe, and there are lifesavers during the season. However, it is best to swim in the tidal pool or to stay very close to shore. Children’s play areas with Jungle Gyms are available for those who prefer not to swim.  Picnic and braai areas are also available. Horses and dogs are allowed.

In the areas closer to the parking, there are often vendors selling ice creams and other refreshments. They also sell firewood and Charcoal. The beach is accessible via Strandfontein Road, off Baden Powell Drive
