Kaaiman’s Grotto
Kaaiman’s Grotto, also known locally as Clifford’s Cave, is an unusual seaside cave on the coast near Wilderness. It was originally a popular restaurant that could accommodate up to 270 guests. During the days of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train, passengers could stop there for refreshments while enjoying the bay.
A major landslide in 2006 damaged the railway line, bringing the train service to an end and forcing the restaurant to close. The cave was eventually taken over by Clifford Brandon, who transformed it into an off-grid home, informal museum and community shelter. He has lived there for many years and maintains the space with the help of companions.
The cavern is decorated with shell chandeliers, religious objects, mannequins and an assortment of collected and inherited items. It has an eclectic atmosphere, with different areas used for living, gathering and reflection. A large wooden deck overlooks the Indian Ocean. The grotto operates without electricity and has basic facilities, including fresh water and rudimentary cooking and toilet arrangements.

Getting there
You can reach the grotto on foot from the western end of Wilderness beach, near Leentjiesklip. From the parking area, visitors follow the old, disused Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe railway line and pass through a dark railway tunnel. The walk is approximately 700 metres each way, although the route and walking time can vary.
The railway tracks continue beyond the grotto towards the Kaaimans River railway bridge and Victoria Bay.
