Jaftha’s Flower Farm

Jaftha’s Flower Farm, situated on the Spaanschemat River in the Constantia Valley, has a flower-growing history dating back to the 1800s. Generations of families in the area grew flowers and strawberries. The name Strawberry Lane recalls this history. Before dawn, farmers would travel to Adderley Street to sell their strawberries and cut flowers.

The Jaftha family is one example of this long tradition. Like many other families in the area, they were forcibly removed from their leased land during the 1960s under the Group Areas Act and relocated to Grassy Park.

Moses Jaftha eventually returned to growing flowers in Constantia during the 1980s. His sons, Charles and Malcolm, have continued the family tradition. Today, the farm grows dahlias, freesias, arum lilies, watsonias and other flowers. Some of the family’s dahlia bulbs have been preserved for more than sixty years.

The family also helps preserve the history of Constantia’s displaced communities through heritage education and oral history.

Today, a simple sign advertising “Fresh flowers cut daily” welcomes customers who visit the farm from across the Cape Peninsula.
