Dappat se gat

Dappat se Gat’ is a secluded beach that is great for surfing. The water is warm. The rocky cliffs shelter the area from the wind. There are some small caves in the cliffs that are interesting to explore but swimming here is not safe due to the dangerous rip currents.

Shells can often be found on this beach, especially after winter storms and low tide. If you plan to collect shells, please follow local regulations and take only empty shells. Shell identification guide

The Story of Dappat se Gat

According to an old story, Dappat was a notorious livestock thief who knew the coastline and its caves very well. Cattle farmers from Gordon’s Bay used the grasslands around the beach to graze their animals, giving Dappat an opportunity to help himself to a few cattle.

His hiding place was the large cave at the back of the beach. He would lead the stolen cattle into the cave, where the rising tide would eventually cut off the entrance. As the water came in, it also washed away the cattle tracks, leaving the farmers baffled as to where their missing animals had gone.

For some time, Dappat managed to outwit them. Then, according to the tale, his luck ran out. A fishing boat passing offshore noticed smoke rising from the cave and raised the alarm. Police were called to investigate, and when they entered the cave, they discovered Dappat — along with stolen cattle and evidence of his activities.
