Grassy Park is an area on the cape flats, surrounded by lakes and wetlands. Home to diverse fauna and flora, there are several nature reserves in the area. During the 1950s it became the home of people designated non-white by the apartheid government. These ”non-white” people were forced out of “white” areas and into sprawling townships on the Cape Flats. Grassy Park was proclaimed in 1935 which made it possible for municipal services to be available in the area. In the 1960s it became part of the greater Cape Town Municipality.
