Eerste Rivier, meaning “First River” is a suburb of Cape Town within the Oosteberg subregion on the Cape Flats. Eerste River was a Station along the Cape Town, Wellington and Docks Railway line. It was most likely established as a Village when the Railway Line from Cape Town reached Eerste River in 1862. The Village of Eerste Rivier is an important road junction between Cape Town, Bellville, Stellenbosch, and Somerset West.

The suburb began as a series of farms in the area, it grew quickly after the 1980s when people settled there. Eerste River included several other suburbs such as Delft and Blackheath but these were later given their own municipalities.
