The Attaquaskloof Ox wagon trail was discovered in 1689. It has a long history and was one of the earliest recorded crossings of the Outeniqua mountains into the Klein Karoo. Khoi chief Hykon of the Inkgua people, who lived in the Klein Karoo, requested a trade visit from the European settlers at the Cape, who had by then been established for 37 years. The request was approved by Governor Simon van der Stel, who sent Ensign Isaac Schrijver of the Dutch East India Company and a party of 21 men on the journey. Travelling east along the old Kaapse Wagenweg before turning inland near present-day Mossel Bay, the expedition followed an established Khoi migration route through Attaquaskloof. Schrijver’s crossing became the first documented settler route over the mountains and took about a week to complete. Over time, Attaquaskloof became an important transport route into the interior and was later used by explorers, including Van Plettenberg and Van Reenen. For nearly 180 years, thousands of ox wagons passed through the pass carrying people and supplies. Until the Robinson Pass was built in 1869, the route was trampled by thousands of oxen dragging wagons. This is rated as one of the top 10 4×4 trails in Southern Africa. Interesting sights of historical significance are the ruins of an old toll house and an Anglo-Boer War blockhouse.

The Cango Caves are located in Precambrian limestone at the foothills of the Swartberg range. The principal cave is one of the country’s finest and best-known. The caves are South Africa’s oldest tourist attraction, and they attract many visitors. The entrance to the cave was discovered in 1780 by a farmer, Jacobus Van Zyl, and his herdsman who were looking for lost cattle. He was lowered down into a chamber that was found to be as long as a football field, and is named Van Zyl Hall in his honour. Further exploration was done, and a second chamber was discovered in 1792. The caves soon became a popular place to visit. People have been visiting the caves since the 1800s. The Cango caves are frequently described as one of the great Natural Wonders of The World, and they are the biggest show cave system in Africa. They are unique and would not have normally formed in this area, but are a result of faulting. There is evidence that they have been inhabited since the Early Stone Age. There are cave paintings at the entrance; unfortunately, many have been destroyed and defaced. The caves began to be formed in crystalline limestone about 100 million years ago. Johnny van Wassenaer, the cave’s first official guide, is said to have walked 29 hours to find the end of the caves in 1898. When there, he is said to have calculated that he was 25 km from the entrance, and 275 m underground; his route apparently followed an underground river. -33°23’34.80″ S 22°12’54.00″ E How Long Do You Need to Visit the Cango Caves?

A trip to The Cango Wildlife Ranch will be filled with anticipation and eagerness to see what lies beyond the open jaws of the crocodile that greets you on arrival. Upon entering, guests are greeted by friendly volunteers who are ready to take you and your family on the tour through the ranch. Legend has it that this once-lost valley was rediscovered in 2006. The valley is teeming with wild animals. An ancient tribe built a great temple. The Great Temple is now just a ruin today. Perhaps human sacrifices were carried out here as there are statues of Nyami Nyami the river god guarding the entrance. The valley was discovered and exploited after 1835 when diamonds were discovered and “crocodile safe” cages were lowered into the river in order to mine the diamonds. According to the legend, this upset the river god. However, for some reason, the valley was forgotten. Recently, it has been opened for visitors who can take an interactive voyage to the historic site. Among the animals you could encounter are Malawian Cichlids, baby Nile Crocodiles, Cape Vultures, Lorikeets, Flamingos, Wallabies, and Madagascan Lemurs. Visitors can experience the sight of the Jumping Jaws demonstration, where full-grown crocodiles leap from the water for their hand-fed lunch. There are shops and restaurants, and a children’s play area. Animal walkabouts, aviaries, cliffs, islands, gorges, swinging bridges, underwater tanks, and tropical houses are all part of the exciting offering at this adventure park Cango Wildlife Ranch, R62 12 Tiran Street Oudtshoorn
