Kramat of Sheikh Yusaf Shaykh Yusuf or Abadin Tadia Tjoessoep was born at Macassar in 1626. He was of noble birth, a maternal nephew of King Biset of Goa. Before being exiled to the Cape, he studied in Arabia under the tutelage of several pious teachers. When he arrived here, on the Voetboeg, he was royally welcomed by Governor Simon van de Stel. His Indonesian background necessitated that he and his 49 followers be settled well away from Cape Town.. He had an allowance of 12rix dollars from the Cape authorities to support himself and his party. The party was accommodated on the farm Zandvliet. near the mouth of the Eerste River, in Macassar. This became the first settlement of Muslims in South Africa. It was a vibrant group. The settlement became a sanctuary for fugitive slaves. Here, the message of Islam was disseminated to the slave community living in Cape Town. When he died on the 23rd of May 1699 he was buried on the hill overlooking Macassar. A shrine was built over his grave. Today it remains a place of pilgrimage. According to Cape Muslim tradition, an invisible sacred boundary known as the “Circle of Saints” (Ring van Kramatte) surrounds the Cape Peninsula. The tradition holds that the circle protects the area from famine, epidemics and natural disasters, with the Kramat of Sheikh Yusuf at Macassar regarded as its anchor Macassar

Macassar Beach is on the eastern shores of False Bay. Cape Town, The beach occupies the most unspoilt area of the bay, sitting in front of a belt of protected dunes four kilometres long. During the apartheid era, Macassar Beach was demarcated for non-whites due to its proximity to the local townships Macassar Beach is part of a continuous strip of fine sand that stretches right around this side of False Bay all the way to the Strand. It is a relatively protected beach for swimming and surfing. Fishing is however prohibited because of the no-take policy in the area. Shells can often be found on this beach, especially after winter storms and low tide. If you plan to collect shells, please follow local regulations and take only empty shells. Shell identification guide The beach is close to shops and restaurants. The derelict Macassar pavilion was close by, The pavilion fell victim to the shifting sands after it closed in the 1990s. It has since been demolished as part of the revised Dune Management Plan, which aims to help restore the Dune Systems of the Western Cape. The dunes are the highest naturally occurring dune system within the Cape Peninsula and are home to certain unique plant species. The last remaining forest of Milkwood Trees on the Peninsula is to be found here. Check the tides here Best beaches in the Western Cape article

The former glory of the Macassar Water park makes for some photogenic scenes on the beach. The Water park was built on the edge of the Macassar Dunes nature reserve in 1991. The nature reserve covers 2760 acres and it is one of the highest and biggest dune systems in the Cape. However, nature was the downfall of the park. The adjacent dunes crept gradually onto the site. The sand moved by the wind made the battle of continually clearing sand from the facilities at the pavilion too onerous, and the owners gave up the battle. Sand is piled up everywhere from the ticket office to the swimming pools and the slides. Macassar Beachfront

The Eerste River rises on the Dwarsberg 60 km east of Cape Town. The catchment area consists of the eastern part of the Cape Flats west of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and south of the Tygerberg hills. It is a short river, just 40 km. The major tributary, The Kuils River, is about 30 km long to its point of confluence with the Eerste River. The river flows into the sea at Macassar. Fish in the river include: rainbow trout that are commonly found in the sections above Stellenbosch and Somerset West, respectively. Carp is common in the middle and lower part of the river. Freshwater fishing species in the Western Cape are explained in our illustrated guide Fishing code of practice
