Battery park at the V&A Waterfront holds archaeological significance as it preserves the rear ramparts of the historic Amsterdam Battery, one of Cape Town’s oldest structures. Before the park’s construction, excavations uncovered two circular walls, which have been retained. The Dutch built the Amsterdam Battery in 1784 on the site of an earlier 1781 fort to defend Table Bay Harbour from enemy ships. In 1827, the British repurposed it to hold prisoners from the Eastern Cape Frontier Wars. The British extensively remodelled the Battery in 1882 and reinforced it in 1879 using surplus material from the Breakwater quarry. It was disbanded in 1898 and partially demolished in 1905 for harbour and railway expansions. To reflect the old Battery’s aesthetic, stone-filled gabion walls have been incorporated throughout the park. There are loads of activities to keep children entertained, a scooter path, a high-quality skatepark, and a multi-court for netball, basketball, and soccer games. There is stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing in the canal. Then there is Rollercade, which is the 1st indoor roller-skating amusement park in Cape Town. Providing a safe and friendly environment for the entire family to enjoy roller-skating, a game of pool or just to sit back and enjoy the music. Breakwater Gaol

The Breakwater Prison, also known as the Breakwater Gaol, was constructed in 1860 to house British convicts employed on building the breakwater that enabled Cape Town’s harbour to be developed. A quarry below the prison, near the site of today’s Two Oceans Aquarium, supplied hard rock that was transported by hand-powered rail wagons up the hill and through a tunnel. Many inmates had been convicted of petty crimes, including escaping forced naval service in England, offences that carried sentences of hard labour. The building visible today is the Industrial Breakwater Prison, a national monument designed with four castellated turrets and an enclosed courtyard, based on the Millbank and Pentonville prisons in England. It functioned as a prison for only about ten years. In 1891, white prisoners were moved into this building, making it the first site in South Africa to racially segregate black and white convicts. Before segregation, a white convict was required to sleep between two black convicts, on the belief that language and cultural barriers would limit plotting and dissent. The prison gained a reputation as one of the most feared in the world, with stories claiming inmates from almost every known nationality were held there. After a strike in 1885, during which black and white convicts met together in the yard, authorities enforced stricter racial separation. The prison also included a punishment block with a human-powered treadmill used both as labour and punishment. Several notorious criminals passed through the prison. Percy Collingwood, a safe breaker who managed to open a prison safe with his bare hands. “Frenchie” Ferroli, another inmate, escaped by dressing in a warder’s uniform and calmly walking through the prison gates After its brief period as a prison, the building became a juvenile offenders’ institution, and from 1926 to 1989 it served as a hostel for black dock workers. The prison finally closed in 1923. The complex was repurposed rather than being demolished. In 1970, the buildings were declared a National Monument under the old National Monuments Council legislation. Since 1991, it has housed the Breakwater Lodge and the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business within what is now the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Traces of its past remain, including graffiti carved into the stone walls by inmates and the nearby Gallows Hill area, which was once part of the prison complex, long before Robben Island was used as a prison. The Chavonnes Battery was a Dutch fort that guarded the entry to Cape Town for almost 150 years. It was built in 1724, using Table Mountain rock and granite and cemented with a mixture made by burning seashells on Robben Islandand. It is now a museum and a function venue Visitors are invited to try on an 18th-century tricorn hat and step below sea level for fascinating perspectives of the 17th to 19th-century Cape Town. The story begins at a time of postal stones, shipwrecks, isolation wards, soldiers and slaves, exiles and explorers, locals and settlers, and convicts. At the Chavonnes Battery Museum, you can see the different types of cannons, uniforms and touch walls that are still standing after three centuries. The museum is housed in the foundation of the original fort. You can explore the archaeological excavation downstairs or visit the rotating exhibits on the ground floor. Meander between and over the Ruins of the Fort that have been buried for 140 years below sea level in the sand of the original Cape Town shoreline, You will find pottery and glass, and objects displayed that were used by the people of the city long ago. Racing a dragon boat is fast-paced and gives you a very good workout. Mujaji Dragon Boat Club offers dragon boat racing and team building in the V&A. Paddlers don’t have to be super fit, as it is more important to work together as a team, whilst doing your best.
