The Groenlandberg conservancy (Green Mountain country) Conservancy is within a mountain range beyond the Hottentots Holland range. The area is commonly known as “The Elgin Valley. For hundreds of years, Khoi people grazed their cattle here. This is the fertile Cape fruit country where deciduous fruit, including grapes, are grown. In the early days of the Cape colony, the area took several days to reach by ox wagon. The conservancy ranges from Viljoenspas in the north to Houwhoek and Botrivier in the south. It is contained by the Palmiet, Bot, and Jakkals rivers. Conservation efforts by local farmers and residents have been initiated to take stock of the environment and cultural resources. A voluntary forum was established in 1994 and there has been a noticeable increase in sustainability, social upliftment and environmental conservation on private land. There has also been a focus on the removal of alien plants which are the biggest threat to plant and animal biodiversity. There is an annual cost of R600 million needed to clear the over 10 million hectares of land in South Africa. Facebook

The Groot Winterhoek Wilderness is known for its rugged, wild landscape, The greater area is particularly important for protecting mountain fynbos and wildlife. It is also one of Cape Town’s sources of fresh, clean water, and is a World Heritage Site. The landscape is filled with fynbos . The Protea Pool and Disa Pool are a short walk from the parking lot. There are some ancient San and Khoi rock paintings to be seen, also the oldest farm was established here by settlers in 1875. Early settlers in the area used animals to transport produce and supplies between Porterville and Saron, the tracks are still visible above Driebosch and Weltevrede.. There’s plenty to do in Groot Winterhoek, including various day and overnight hikes. De Hel natural pools are some of the largest in the Cape, on the much longer De Tronk trail. These are harder to access via a very steep path. However, the water is crystal clear. Note that there is no reception inside the park, which means management won’t allow lone hikers. Dogs are not allowed on Cape Nature trails.

Heerenlogement cave, The Herenlogement ( gentleman’s lodging) on the slopes of the Langeberg mountains near Clanwilliam has been inhabited by people for Millennia. Long before settlers arrived in the CapeKhoi Khoi people used it for shelter. Simon Van der Stel visited the cave on his way to Namaqualand to inspect copper mines. Since Jan Danckert was first shown the cave by locals in 1660 when he and a group of settlers were investigating the areas to the North of Cape Town visitors on various expeditions have stayed over and all painstakingly engraved their names in the rock walls of the cave. There is a comprehensive record of the people who visited the Herenlogement. The cave was warm and dry with space to keep the horses sheltered. A bonus is the freshwater spring close by. For more information, visit here.

Kamanassie nature reserve is a trove of Khoisan history, the name means “Mountain of water” in the Khoisan language. The area is dotted with caves with many examples of rock art. This area receives rain throughout the year. This sustains the vegetation, which in turn supports and sustains the small herd of endangered Cape mountain zebra, which are greatly dependent on water. These animals were nearly hunted to extinction when they were used as a resource to feed the servants of farmers in the area. The zebra at Kamanassie are descended from a pure gene pool as no animals have been introduced. However, from just 6 animals in the 1970s, there is now a herd of over 40. The reserve office is in Uniondale, where you can get an entry permit for the reserve. There is also a self-catering guesthouse at this venue. The perimeter of the reserve is 131.8 km. The total area of the mountain range, managed by CapeNature is 49 430 ha, of which 22 374 ha is privately owned. The remaining 27 056 ha is state-owned land. coordinates 33°33’50”S and 33°37’10”S and 22°27’29”E and 23°01’55”E. Trails in the reserve Wapadsnek pass

The word “Khoisan” is the collective name given to describe two separate indigenous groups of the South Western regions of Africa, namely the Khoi (aka Khoe) who were herders, and the San who were hunter-gatherers. They were scattered throughout the region into various tribes, each led by a traditional chief Genadendal was originally established with the purpose of evangelizing to the Khoikhoi. Some of them ended up settling in the area after being forced out of the Cape by Dutch settlers. Traditional dwellings that these nomadic people have built for centuries, were made from the plant Cyperus Textilis or Cape Papyrus. This grows all along the banks of the water streams in the Western Cape. Reeds are cut and stored until they are dry. The huts can be quickly broken down or rebuilt. An oval beehive-shaped framework made of branches stuck into the ground, which was then tied together and covered with woven reed mats. The size of a hut varied depending on the size of the family living in it. The fibre in the reeds is tough and supple. The mats made from it can be rolled up and easily transported on the backs of oxen. In winter the reeds will swell and provide a watertight shelter, while in summer they will shrink and the huts are well-ventilated. Traditionally, the reeds were pierced and woven together with the same material, which was platted into string. The missionaries encouraged the Khoi people to settle permanently on the mission station and to build permanent clay brick houses. They cultivated the land and enjoyed an enriched Christian education Khoi camp museum can be found in Kerk Street, Genadendal

Klipgat cave The Klipgat caves were formed over millions of years. This is caused by erosion caused by underwater aquifers. The limestone caves were exposed by changing sea levels. They were then inhabited by Stone Age people later known as the Khoi Khoi. There is evidence of this habitation in the form of implements and human bones which were found dating back 70,000 years. The cave is named after a window-like opening from which you can enjoy spectacular views of the bay. There are two chambers within the cave. The main area has a circular boardwalk around the excavation site. It is better to visit the site at low tide. Three things made the Klipgat Cave perfect for early human habitation: there was masses of shelter in the cave, there was a lot of fresh water and a constant food source available. These findings are some of the oldest remains of modern homo sapiens showing that modern humans originated in Africa over 200 000 years ago Excavations done in 1969 unearthed 2000-year-old pottery, stone and bone artefacts. Also, the remains of shellfish, fish and other animals that the Khoikhoi bushmen had eaten and thrown away the bones. Bones from sheep were also found, which shows that these people were herding animals. There was also evidence that they had dogs. The Khoi Khoi people thrived in the area until the 18th century It is a 7-kilometre walk to get there from Gansbaai harbour. You can, however, approach it from the Walker Bay Nature Reserve via Hermanus. There is still a bit of climbing to do to get to the cave. . Klipgat Cave is one of the most important historical sites in the Western Cape of World Heritage significance...
