Dassen Island just off the coast of Yzerfontein was named in 1601 by Dutch explorer Joris van Spilbergen after the dassies (rock hyraxes) that once thrived there. It is one of about 34 underwater mountains along the west coast of South Africa, whose pinnacles rise above sea level. It is 4,5km long and 2km wide. The highest point is a mere 10m above sea level. Early accounts describe the island as covered with dense, two-meter-tall vegetation that was riddled with burrows where penguins bred in abundance. Exploitation of Natural Resources In the mid-1800s, Dassen Island’s guano was mined extensively for use in fertilizers. This was followed by the exploitation of African penguin eggs, collected for public consumption from 1870 to 1967. At its peak in 1919, nearly 600,000 fresh eggs were taken in a single season. with an estimated 13 million eggs taken between 1900 and 1930. The penguin population was estimated at 400,000 during that time and has since plummeted to near-extinction levels. Penguin numbers have declined sharply, from an estimated one million in the early 20th century to just 8,000. Years of guano scraping deprived penguins of vital nesting material. While these practices have ceased, overgrazing by introduced wild rabbits continues to damage the island’s vegetation. Nature conservationists and scientists visit the island to study its penguin and cormorant populations. Conservation Efforts Today, Dassen Island is a proclaimed nature reserve and the first South African inshore island to release a public conservation plan. With restricted access, it serves as a vital sanctuary for endangered seabirds, including the African penguin. Pollution The 1994 sinking of the Apollo Sea. A bulk ore carrier near Dassen Island and the resultant oil spill caused environmental damage to the island and threatened its penguin population. Geography and Present Day Dassen Island spans 3.1 km in length and 1 km in width, covering 2.73 km². Its flat terrain features narrow white beaches and a small jetty, with no permanent human inhabitants. Once an outpost of the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century, its historical exploitation stands in stark contrast to its current role as a refuge for vulnerable species. The island has a large tortoise population and is the breeding place for a number of seabirds. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide. Efforts to protect Dassen Island’s fragile ecosystem highlight the importance of conservation in addressing the consequences of human activity.

Dassen Island Lighthouse is a 28-metre, circular, red and white striped cast-iron tower. Chance Brothers and Company, from Birmingham, England, were selected to supply most of the components for the lighthouse. It was decided to erect the lighthouse on the southern side because this is where the highest point is located, approximately 16 meters above sea level. Stone was quarried on the island itself and transported to the site by ox wagon. The lighthouse currently has a powerful light of 1,400,000 candela which can be seen from Signal Hill in Cape Town, 55 kilometres away. It has a range of 24 sea miles, on a clear night. The light pattern consists of 2 white flashes every 30 seconds. A large 27,000 litre stone reservoir was built to store oil for the original light. When electricity was installed on the island, the reservoir was used as the base of the electric fog signal but it was destroyed during a gale in 1918. It has been replaced by a guyed aluminium mast. The first recorded wreck in the area was the Dutch whaler, Haagman, which foundered on the rocks in 1683, and at least another 37 wrecks occurred in the period up until 1893. There were two lighthouse keepers and then later three who were employed on the island, which was considered to be a lonely outpost. Supplies were delivered once a month. Dassen island lighthouse is now unmanned but easily serviced by helicopter. 33°25’55.6″S 18°05’20.2″E Yzerfontein

Die Vishuis At the turn of the nineteenth century, the only buildings in Yzerfontein were a farmstead and a small thatched cottage, known as the ‘Vishuis.’ So the Vishuis is the oldest building in Yzerfontein. It was built from local gravel and limestone. The current municipal boardroom in The Vishuis used to be a storeroom for fish and salt. When the Dutch arrived, they needed building materials. They built lime kilns to burn mussels to form a binding material,l which was used as cement. The kilns were built above ground level, with lime stones that did not crack when heated. Inside was a fine grid on which they placed layers of mussel shells and wood. The heat of the fire turned the shells into fine ash, which then fell through the grid. The ash was then mixed with water and placed in an enclosure to dry. Here, it became a type of lime to be used as a binding material. The Castle in Cape Town and many farmhouses on the West Coast were built using it. Salt was added to the lime, and this was widely used to whitewash the walls of the buildings. Vishuis was the property of Matthys Schreuder, who was also the owner of the ‘Langhuisie’ holiday home. The Langhuisie is the setting for a ghost story. A man who lost his head. The story tells of a widower by the name of Rozen who used to visit Mrs Schreuder when her husband was away. He formulated a plan to murder him. One of Mrs Shreuder’s daughters overheard the plan being discussed and told her father, who changed his will in her favour. One day, Schreuder went out fishing with a friend. Screuder disappeared. His friend’s body was washed up with bruises on his neck, pointing to murder by strangulation. Rosen told Mrs. Schreuder he’d killed her husband, but she didn’t believe him. He returned to the body, cut off the head, and brought it back to show her. It is not known what happened to the head; some say it was disposed of in the outside toilet and others say it was burned in the lime kiln. Langhuisie is said to be haunted by the ghost of the man who lost his head. 50 Main Rd, Yzerfontein, -33.344499805, 18.154262171
