The Knersvlakte Nature Reserve is in the Matzikama region. It covers an area north of Vredendal and Vanrhynsdorp. The reserve, which was established on 24 September 2014, is owned by the South African branch of the Worldwide Fund for Nature and managed by the provincial conservation agency Cape Nature. The Knersvlakte is one of the richest and most diverse succulent regions in the world. Its miniature succulents come in all shapes and sizes and are known colloquially by names like baba-boudjies, krapogies and vingers-en-duimpie This nature reserve between Vanrhynsdorp and Nuwerus is home to of 1/3 of the world’s total dwarf succulent’s species.

Latsky radio museum

Latsky Radio Museum is owned by George Latsky. Ever since he was a child he has had an obsession with all kinds of radios. The collection started with George Latsky trawling second-hand shops and flea markets to find radios to add to his collection. People have also donated radios. He has also repairs and builds old radios from scratch. One of the most unusual radios he has in the collection is the Russian spy ship radio used to encrypt messages during the Cold War. The museum has different rooms filled with all things related to broadcasting and there are some fascinating artefacts to be seen. The collection includes early domestic wooden cabinet valve radios, Bakelite tabletop radios, communication receivers, and military radios with examples of period accessories. 4 Church Street, Vanrhynsdorp, Cape West Coast

Ou Tronk / Knechtsvlakte Kwekery/Nursery

The old jail (Ou Tronk en Kwekery ) is now a museum, gift shop, and succulent nursery all rolled into one. The last prisoners left in the 1930s, after which the building fell into a state of disrepair. It has now been carefully restored. Each cell has a different theme, each telling some of the many stories that Vanrhynsdorp has to share. Rumours of ghosts abound for those who are brave enough to try to meet up with them. The Olifants River

The Olifants River originates in the Winterhoek Mountains. Its upper catchment area is around Ceres and the Cederberg mountains. The river flows to the northwest through a deep narrow valley that widens and flattens into a broad floodplain below Clanwilliam. Its main tributary is the Doring River. The river is about 265 km long with a catchment area of 46,220 km². The Olifants River drains into the Atlantic Ocean near Papendorp where the mouth of the Olifants River is split in two by an island. Here you can see some very interesting rock formations. The Olifants Valley produces high-quality Honey, Rooibos Tea and excellent Wines, but the Valley is best known for its citrus plantations. Olifants River Estuary Near the village of Papendorp, on the West Coast, is the Olifants River estuary, which supports a large salt marsh. Salt is still collected here in the age-old way. The estuary protects nine Nama-Karoo bird species. It also supports over 15 000 waterbirds. There are information boards at the estuary explaining about the birds. Find a list of ships that wrecked near the Olifants River mouth The dams along the river are: Clanwilliam Dam has a storage capacity of 127,000,000 cubic metres. It is a concrete gravity dam that was established in 1935. The wall was raised to its current height of 43m in 1964. The width of the wall is 235 m. The main purpose of the dam is to provide irrigation water for agriculture downstream. The Bulshoek Dam has a storage capacity of 7,500,000 cubic metres. The dam is very popular amongst Bass Fishermen as it is home to some nice-sized smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. The dam is also popular for water skiing, canoeing, tubing, and jet skiing. Traut’s Tie Museum

Traut’s Tie Museum is owned by Cecil Traut who was a bartender who pulled pints in the local bar. Over the 60 years he worked there he made a collection of over 2400 ties each of which had been a gift. In his time he never bought a tie but each one has a story. It is not clear if he wore ties. Some of the ties are old, dating back to the 1800s and they come from far and wide. Before his death, Cecil asked the owner of the Country Lodge to keep the ties and keep the collection growing.
