2 Fascinating Bird Islands off the West Coast Malgas and Jutten Islands are marine protected areas within the West Coast National Park. The Western Cape coast supports many seabird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide. Malgas Island Malgas Island is a marine protected area within the West Coast National Park. It Is about 800 m from the mainland at the northern entrance of Saldanha Bay. It is a small island of about 8.3 ha and almost rectangular in shape and fairly flat. The highest point is about 9 m above sea level. Parts of the island consist of smooth rock and big boulders with patches of shallow sand, shell fragments and guano. The island is occupied by nesting Cape Gannets. Other nesting seabirds are mostly on the periphery. However,small numbers of the Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus have established themselves in the centre of the island, Some rocky outcrops amongst the gannets’ nesting ground are used by Crowned and Cape Cormorants. The sparse vegetation is mostly low winter growing herbs but almost no vegetation during summer. There are no mammals on Malgas Island. Jutten island Jutten Island is also a marine protected area that is a large, triangular island lying about 800 m from Jut Point at the southern entrance to Saldanha Bay it rises to some 60 m. Sparse vegetation grows over numerous boulders strewn across its flat perimeter and up the sides of two small hills. The site is part of the NPA and permission to dive has to be obtained. A boat dive can be arranged on the eastern side of the island. All sorts of plant life, including a huge kelp forest, anemones, and sea urchins, can be seen. Many varieties of fish are also possible encounters. The coastal islands of southern Africa are part of the continental plate, and during the Pleistocene glaciations (12,000 years ago) were part of the mainland. About 2000 years ago the sea level was at least 3 m higher than it is now so they were often underwater at high tide. Most of the flora and fauna could not establish itself on Malgas and Jutten islands. Also, the seabirds themselves impact the biodiversity. The area gets covered in guano which, while it has great fertilizing qualities, is in itself quite inert.

North Head Lighthouse

The first North Head lighthouse was a 300mm AGA acetylene gas lantern mounted on a square concrete pillar. It was installed in December 1939. approximately 100 metres from where the Lighthouse stands today. The new lighthouse is a 21 metres tall round concrete tower painted white with black spiral bands the lantern is painted white. It flashes 3 white flashes every 20 seconds and can be seen for 23 nautical miles. It is unattended and monitored at Cape Columbine via a VHF telemetry system. The Lighthouse is on naval property, however a nature trail will take visitors past the tower for viewing. 33°03′02.2″S 17°54′39.1″E

Sishen Saldanha railway line and bridge The potential of a deep-sea harbour at Saldanha was recognised as early as 1907. It is the deepest and safest harbour and is South Africa’s largest natural anchorage. Saldanha Bay is partly protected by a 3.1 km-long artificial breakwater. When ISCOR began mining at Sishen in 1953 in the Northern Cape, it became necessary to build a railway line to transport large quantities of ore. Construction of the railway line began in 1973. The fully electrified line is 861 kilometres long and crosses a large part of the West Coast. Sishen Saldanha railway line and bridge The only tunnel near Elands Bay is the Bobbejaansberg Tunnel which is 840m long, The impressive Sishen Saldanha railway bridge over the Olifants River is worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. It was completed in 1975, the bridge is 1035m in length, supported by 22 pillars that each extend 45m into the riverbed. Record-breaking train On 26 August 1989, South Africa set the world record for the longest and heaviest train ever assembeled covered the distance. There were 660 fully loaded wagons of iron ore. The total length was about 7.2 km, and it weighed in at nearly 70 000 tonnes. The iron ore cargo alone weighed in at more than 68 000 tonnes. The train used nine electric locomotives and seven diesel-electric locomotives positioned along the length of the train, which had to be coordinated to distribute the pulling and braking forces. The line was specifically engineered for heavy haul operations. It was built with continuously welded rail lines on concrete sleepers. It was designed to accommodate very heavy axle loads. Long passing loops, steep gradients. A centralised traffic control system has enabled the movement of some of the world’s largest freight trains. The South Head Lighthouse

The South Head lighthouse began as a twenty-three metre aluminium lattice tower, upon which rested a Stone-Chance lantern with a lamp that exhibited four white flashes every thirty seconds. The current lighthouse is at the entrance to Saldanha Bay at a place called Donkergat. It was built in 1969 and it stands at 21 meters. The property belongs to the SA National Defence Force. It is a round cylindrical concrete tower with a lantern and gallery. The upper half of the lighthouse is painted yellow-brown and the lower half is white. The light flashes 4 times every 30 seconds and can be seen for 24 nautical miles. The National Defence Force controls the lighthouse and stands behind locked gates and is unfortunately not open to the public. GPS S33.105630 E17.954283 33°06’20.3″S 17°57’15.4″E 21
