Citrusdal Golf Club has a nine-hole course situated in the beautiful fruit-growing town. It’s quite flat and a relatively easy one to play for most players. The course was conceived when in 1960 a group of 15 local men decided to build a golf course at the common ground known locally as the “Koeikamp.”The men worked hard and succeeded in building a 4-hole course, but the upkeep proved too much and it ran into disrepair. In 1975 the “Koeikamp” golf area was renovated and 9 holes were completed. Currently, Citrusdal Golf Club is 5264 metres of parkland with a par of 70 and is one of the best 9-hole golf courses in the Western Cape. It is on the banks of the Olifants River and is very level with magnificent views of the majestic Cederberg Mountains.

There are many ancient rock formations all over the Cederberg Wilderness and in the Cederberg mountains. The Stadsaal caves are a series of caverns carved into the rocks by thousands of years of erosion. The area was once a sacred site for Bushmen who left their decorative rock art. There are wonderful, well-preserved pictures of elephants that once roamed the plains. You need to have a permit to enter the Cederberg Wilderness Reserve, as it is run by Cape Nature. (Available at Driehoek Farm)From Citrusdal, take the Algeria turnoff and continue to the Matjiesriver Nature Reserve. The caves are 5 kilometres from the Algeria campsite.. There is a gate barring the entrance to the caves; it can be unlocked with the combination on your CapeNature permit. In addition to ancient artwork, the caves have some historical graffiti left by visitors from the late 19th century. Names and dates are carved or written on the rocks, with some visitors returning regularly. One of the most well-known names is D. F. Malan, who later became Prime Minister of South Africa. He visited the site in 1919.

The Cederberg Mountains are named after the Clanwilliam cedar. Other predominant vegetation is Mediterranean fynbos in the wetter south and west, changing to semi-desert scrub in the north and east The mountains are well known for their interesting rock formations. Some fine examples of San rock art are in caves and overhangs throughout the area such as the Stadsaal Cave. The mountains cover 50 km North/South and 20 km East /West. To the North are the Pakhuis Mountains and in the South are the KoueBokkeveld Mountains and the Skurweberge. The highest peaks are Sneeuberg (2026 m) and Tafelberg (1969 m). Well-known landmarks include the Maltese Cross, Wolfberg Arch, and Wolfberg Cracks. The Cederberg is renowned for its quality of rock climbing routes, particularly around the Krakadouw and Tafelberg peaks. These rock formations are Table Mountain Sandstone and tend to be reddish in colour. Within the formations are bands of shale and several important fossils have been found here. These fossils include those of primitive fish which have been dated to 450 million years ago. Boer War Connection .The Cederberg mountains were most likely the southernmost battleground of the Second Boer War. A small band of Boer guerrillas came here from the Boer republics in the north in the hope of gaining popular support amongst the local farmers. The farmers may have had no sympathy for the British, but they knew who was going to win the war. Boer commandos were confronted in the Cederberg by a single Englishman, who ordered them to surrender. They laughed at him because he was alone and there were several of them. They attempted to reason with him, but he would not back down. The place where he fell is called Engelsmanskloof.

The Bokkeveld is also often referred to as Koue Bokkeveld This is a range of Mountains. The name means Cold Buck Shrubland. The range is composed of Cedarberg Sandstone of the Cape System. It is known to be one of the coldest places in the Western Cape in Winter. Elevations of the range are an average of 1,600 m and there is often snow in the winter months. The Koue Bokkeveld falls within the Olifants/Doring system and the Doring River has its sources in this range, contributing substantially to the flow of the Olifants River catchment area. There is mountain fynbos at higher altitudes. In 1838 a meteorite crashed on the Koue Bokkeveld. It is known as the Koue Bokkeveld or CM2 meteorite. Fragments were dispersed over a wide area but most of them have now been lost. There are also some ancient San rock paintings at Katbakkies. The Piet Esterhuysen Pass passes through the Bokkeveld.
