Spanning five hectares and boasting many trees, the Arderne Gardens was started in 1845 by Ralph Henry Arderne who was a successful timber merchant and cabinet maker from Cheshire, England. There are about four hundred trees in the garden with walkways ponds and grassed areas where you can relax and read a book or have a picnic. The arboretum is home to many creatures large and small, including guinea fowl, geese, ducks, and koi fish. You can enter this area and feed the fish and ducks. Choo Choo Park

Choo Choo Park is a public playground in a big park with lots of sunshine, with trees that provide plenty of shade. The park is well-maintained. There are some eateries and shops across the road where you can buy snacks and drinks The old locomotive in the park for children to play on was a Brooks locomotive #2725, built in 1896. It started its service as number 1 at the Transvaal & Delagoa Bay Collieries Ltd near Witbank. In the early 1900s, it was used to build Simon’s Town Naval Yard. The locomotive later became the property of the City of Cape Town. and was used as a shunter at the Dock Road and Table Bay power stations on the Cape Town foreshore, which opened in 1904. The first turbine-driven alternators at the Council’s Dock Road Power Station were installed in 1913 and 1914. The power station was decommissioned on 5 September 1961 and was demolished in 1962. That is how the locomotive got the name “DYNA-MO”. The Dyna-Mo was retired to the park and was painted in the bright colours you see today. It has recently been spruced up with a new coat of paint. Graveyard haunting

There is a story of two friends who were brave enough to walk through a cemetery in Claremont on the night before Halloween. One of them took some photographs. On looking at the pictures, they noticed that the images showed orbs ( those in the know, would tell you these are expressions of energy showing a supernatural presence). On looking closer the friends noticed a figure of a man with a long beard all dressed in red in one of the pictures. Research showed that Sir John Molteno, the first prime minister of the Cape Colony was buried in the Cemetery. Sir John who joined a Boer commando to fight in the Cape Frontier War was well known for his long white beard. Contemporary paintings show the Boer soldiers fought wearing red attire.

The Black River or (Swart Rivier) is a tributary of The Salt River, the Liesbeek River, and the Elsieskraal River. It rises in Arderne Gardens and flows underground under The railway line and the main road. It continues in a canal through the suburbs of Claremont and Rondebosch naturally through Observatory, Mowbray, and Maitland before it joins the Salt River. 55% of the river runs in canals.
