Riviersonderend Nature Reserve consists of 69,000 hectares of state land and private property which together have been declared as a mountain catchment area. This area supplies the greater Cape Town metro with water. The area is rugged, and you will find rivers, gorges, and forested kloofs. There are some wonderful hikes in the reserve. The area is covered with mountain fynbos, there are examples of ericas and proteas. that encourage sugarbirds and sunbirds. The water courses are lined with wild almond trees and stream cone bushes. The Western Cape is home to hundreds of bird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide.

The Sonderend River is a perennial 170 km long river which rises in the Riviersonderend mountains It is a main tributary of the Breede River. Willem ten Rhyne visited the Cape in 1673. He referred to the river as “sine fine flumen” (Latin for “endless river”). In 1707, Jan Hatogh, a horticulturist for the Dutch East India Company, called the river the “Kantdydnn” from the Hessequa “Kamma-kan Kamma”, meaning “water, endless water” or “endless river”. The largest dam on this river is the Theewaterskloof Dam
