Caledon hot springs have been an attraction to the town since the mid 1800s. Originally the spring was little more than a warm muddy bog surrounded by a few small hostelries. Actual development started in 1710 when Ferdinand Appel secured a grant of 10 ha in the area on the condition that he erect a building for the use of visitors to the curative waters. Caledon was a haven for well-to-do Capetonians and residents of the Western Cape. The sanatorium proved so popular with visitors that in 1902 the original Victorian bath was developed and it is still in use today. This historic cement bath is well maintained and the mineral pools are completely drained and filled every week on a Monday. The historical Victorian Bath is drained and cleaned every Friday. It is a traditional belief that the earth shares its healing power through hot water bubbling up through the earth’s crust. Hot springs still give relief to many ailments today. Thousands of years ago, the hot springs in the Overberg were used by the indigenous people living in the area. Dutch explorers first explored the Overberg in 1694. During their expeditions, they found the hot springs and the healing waters. The town of Caledon was established because of the spring which gave much relief and healing to travellers. Caledon Hot Springs The brown colour is due to the high iron content, which is known as chalybeate. The ‘oily” surfaces are from the high mineral content in the water,r which varies according to weather conditions. The springs produce over a million litres of water every day with an average temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. There are several cascading hot pools with varying degrees of heat. The highest pool is in a beautiful tropical setting and is very warm. This pool is accessed by a staircase. There is also a steam room, sauna, frigidarium pool (cooling off), Swiss shower and jacuzzi. The Spa is currently incorporated into the Caledon Hotel but day visitors can book to make use of the pools, Bookings can be made with Computicket, but numbers are limited.

The Caledon Museum is at 11 Krige Street. The house was originally built by Rev. Theunissen. He did not want to live in the rectory, so the building was used as a maternity home. When there was a facility opened at the local hospital the building was later bought by the Provincial Administration to house the museum. The house at 11 Constitution Street, was bought in 1991 by the museum and was carefully restored. The curator referenced many old books and photos from the era. The Masonic lodge was also bought by the museum at about the same time, as the building had been empty for some time. It was restored for use as store rooms and offices for the museum. The Caledon family photographs are displayed here along with some antique items of furniture. The museum building dates from the Victorian period 1870-1900. All the inside woodwork, windows, ceilings, and doors were restored, however, some of the floors had to be replaced. The museum also took over the management of the Caledon Town Hall.in Plein Streetthat was was completed in 1906. The town hall is a Provincial Heritage Site. 11 Constitution Street Caledon

The Caledon Wildflower Nature Reserve was originally called Victoria Park, which was established in 1899 on land granted by Queen Victoria. It was founded, however, in 1927 by some local enthusiasts and formally laid out in 1933 by landscaper Cecil Young. This reserve is at the edge of the Kloof, named for the window-shaped rock formation. A venster is a window in Afrikaans. At the right time of year, you walk through fields of daisies. There is a network of paths on the aloe-covered rocky mountain. The walks follow quaint pathways with wooden bridges and beautiful picnic areas. There is a fairly extensive network of hiking trails, including a 10km hike to the Swartberg summit at 1,080 metres. There is also a dam near the entrance to the reserve. The annual wildflower show is held in September when the flowers bloom. The display is spectacular, and hikes through the nature reserve are truly worthwhile. The garden also includes a bird sanctuary. The garden is maintained by Volunteers. The Caledon Wildflower Garden and Nature Reserve is filled with history and many unique plant species. The garden is home to many bird species. For full identification and seasonal details, see this comprehensive Western Cape bird guide.Nature Reserve Venster Kloof Nature Garden, 22 Plein Street, Caledon

Rain falls mainly in the winter months.
