The Attaquaskloof Ox wagon trail was discovered in 1689. It has a long history and was one of the earliest recorded crossings of the Outeniqua mountains into the Klein Karoo. Khoi chief Hykon of the Inkgua people, who lived in the Klein Karoo, requested a trade visit from the European settlers at the Cape, who had by then been established for 37 years. The request was approved by Governor Simon van der Stel, who sent Ensign Isaac Schrijver of the Dutch East India Company and a party of 21 men on the journey. Travelling east along the old Kaapse Wagenweg before turning inland near present-day Mossel Bay, the expedition followed an established Khoi migration route through Attaquaskloof. Schrijver’s crossing became the first documented settler route over the mountains and took about a week to complete. Over time, Attaquaskloof became an important transport route into the interior and was later used by explorers, including Van Plettenberg and Van Reenen. For nearly 180 years, thousands of ox wagons passed through the pass carrying people and supplies. Until the Robinson Pass was built in 1869, the route was trampled by thousands of oxen dragging wagons. This is rated as one of the top 10 4×4 trails in Southern Africa. Interesting sights of historical significance are the ruins of an old toll house and an Anglo-Boer War blockhouse.

Boosmansbos Wilderness Area is in the southern Langeberg. It is 14 200ha in extent, within the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. The name comes from the story of a hermit who lived in the forest in the early 19th century. The highest peak is Grootberg at 1 627 m. The higher elevations are scattered with fault valleys. To the north are some sandstone ridges which flatten out to a plateau made up of gravel and sandstone. The south-facing slopes are less steep. Koksposberg is a prominent, ridge running along the front of the mountain. Boosmansbos was proclaimed a Wilderness Area in 1978 in order to safeguard its pristine environment, and it was declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. The Langeberg mountains have all-year rainfall with an average annual rainfall of 1 050 mm. The mountains are covered with Mountain fynbos and forest vegetation and many rare species of ericas are found here. Hiking trails Hiking paths in Boosmansbos Wilderness area are unmarked, however, there are basic huts along the way. The terrain is difficult and the weather can turn nasty. Heavy rains can cause the river to flood. It is imperative to carry an accurate map. Only 12 people are allowed on the paths per day. There are 64km of paths and hikers may choose their own routes. The circular two-day route of 27km is a popular option. Fires are not permitted and all refuse must be removed.

Boplaas Family Vineyards & Distilling is a six-generation family business. It is situated in the picturesque town of Calitzdorp, among the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains in the Klein Karoo. Boplaas’ history of distilling dates back to 1880, when the first order of potstill brandy casks was sent to Cape Town harbor by ox-wagon for delivery to London. After the repeal of distilling licenses in the early 1920s, Boplaas’ copper pot still lay dormant for almost 70 years until it was fired up again in 1989. Boplaas has received numerous accolades for its Potstill Brandy, wines, port-styled wines, and recently Whisky as well. 2 Saayman street info@boplaas.co.za
