The Blombos cave in the Langeberg Mountain Range is an important archaeological site. It is situated within a private nature reserve. Unfortunately, this reserve is not open to the public. The archaeologists who worked on the dig have found what seems to point to cognitive thinking, symbolism, and evidence of technological advancement in the form of the manufacture of composite tools. The cave was occupied about 100,000 years ago. Excavations began in 1992 and work is ongoing. The area was declared to be a provincial heritage site in 2015. There is evidence of body decoration in the form of beads made from shells. While the site is closed to the public, there is a small museum in Stillbaai “Blombos Museum of Archaeology” Here visitors can explore some of the fascinating things that were found at the site. coordinates 21° 12′ 57.6″, -34° 24′ 43.2″

Eels at Stilbaai

The eels at Stilbaai can be seen at the Palinggat Homestead in Langenhovenstreet where you can find the tourism bureau. Here you can see the only tame eels in South Africa. The eels are hand-fed in the fountain next to the historic homestead. Visitors can also feed the eels. These freshwater eels belong to the Anguilla genus of the family Anguillidae. The Longfin eels have been living here for the past 200 years, Eels migrate when they mature (at the age of 10-20 years) to the east of Madagascar to mate and spawn. The larvae are carried to the mainland of Africa by ocean currents. Elvers (young eels) return to the same place their parents stayed. . The seawater is relatively warm, due to it being on the Indian Ocean. It is ideal for swimming, surfing, kite-surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, hydro-foiling, and snorkeling. Shells can often be found on this beach, especially after winter storms and low tide. If you plan to collect shells, please follow local regulations and take only empty shells. Preekstoel beach

Preekstoel is named after the rock formation that resembles a pulpit. Years back, it looked different. A few decades ago, erosion caused some pieces to break off. One of these pieces can be seen in front of the Post Office 4 Kloof Street, Stilbaai The beach is on the wild west coast. The Benguela current keeps the water really cold, and the wind off the Atlantic can also be quite wild. This is where nature meets beautiful open fynbos fields. The West Coast is a great place to enjoy the wildflower season in August and September. You may see the occasional ostrich among the whitewashed cottages. There is a 25-kilometre-long stretch of white sand along this part of the West Coast. The “Preekstoel” or teachers’ pulpit provides some shelter from the wind. The water is only waist-deep for a long way out. This beach has Blue Flag status. There are great braai spots overlooking the lagoon, and the spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is advisable to get there early. Kraalbaai is at the lagoon where houseboats are moored with a wooden jetty that juts out over the waters. Some Hikes in Stilbaai to take as DIY hikes, some easy and some a bit more challenging. West River Bank Hiking Trail This trail along the western shore of the Goukou River is roughly 2km each way and is fairly flat. The route is paved most of the way. There are great birdwatching opportunities. The trail begins from the Info centre, Contact: Stilbaai Tourism Bureau Geelkrans Nature Reserve Self-issue permits are available at the gate. This trail takes approximately 3 hours. loops towards the east and returns via the coast. The trail is fairly challenging and, unfortunately, not very well marked. . The Alikreukel trail This guided trail is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural treasures of the coastal area around Blombos, Jongensfontein and Stilbaai. This is a four-day slackpacking trail, where hikers only carry the basic items for the day and overnight in very comfortable accommodation, with all meals included. One of the days is spent around Stilbaai, Seeing the museum, visiting an olive farm and travelling by canoe up the Goukou River. The trail passes the famous The Blombos Cave, where people lived more than 70,000 years ago, Hikers will be able to see the fish traps that the Khoikhoi people built more than 2000 years ago. Southern Right Trail This coastal trail between Stilbaai and Jongensfontein starts from Morris Point and ends at the caravan park in Jongensfontein. The trail must be done at low tide. It passes beautiful rock pools where you can swim and cool off. There are birds and small animals to be seen in the fynbos along the way The Western Cape is home to hundreds of bird species.
