The District Six Museum commemorates the forced removals carried out under apartheid. Until the 1970s, District Six was home to almost a tenth of Cape Town’s population. In 1966, the government declared the area a white group area, as it had done in Sophiatown in 1957. More than 60,000 people were forcibly removed and relocated to the barren plains of the Cape Flats. The removals threatened more than a century of history, community life and solidarity among working-class residents, as well as the achievements of a diverse community that had built lives there despite difficult circumstances. The District Six Museum opened in 1994 to preserve these memories and recognise the experiences of people displaced from their homes. Homecoming Centre (HCC) The Homecoming Centre at 25A Buitenkant Street is a multi-purpose venue for events and education, operated by the District Six Museum. The Museum purchased the building in 2002 with a generous grant from Atlantic Philanthropies. The then owner, Martin Futeran, also reduced the purchase price, making the acquisition possible. Two blocks from the original museum, the building stands near the edge of the area nominated as a National Heritage Site. It consists of five interconnected structures, including nineteenth- and twentieth-century warehouses and part of an old Gothic-style Congregational church. The buildings were in urgent need of restoration when the Museum acquired them. Much of the restoration work was funded by a legacy grant from the National Lottery Development Trust Fund. 021 466 7200 After hours: 083 411 0614 joe@districtsix.co.za HCC Homecoming Centre, Corner Buitenkant St & Caledon St, Guided tours are held at 9.30 am, 10.30 am, 11.30 am, 12.30 pm 1.30 pm + 2.30 pm Entrance is included in your City Pass ticket The suburbs of Zonnebloem, Walmer Estate and University Estate make up what was originally District Six
