The Salt River

The Salt River is a confluence of the Black River which in turn is a confluence of the Elsieskraal River and the Liesbeeck River. It flows into Table Bay at the Salt River mouth where On 24 May 1695 the VOC ships Oosterland and Kallendijk wrecked Its catchment is part of the Central Management Area of the City of Cape Town. The Battle of Salt River took place in 1510. This was a small military engagement between Portuguese sailors led by Francisco de Almeida and the indigenous Goringhaiqua. It was the first military encounter between Europeans and the indigenous people at the Cape. The Portuguese suffered a massacre by the Goringhaiqua.
