Coetzenburg Stadium

Coetzenburg Stadium is a multi-sports venue with a full A-grade athletics track. It is on a portion of the old Coetsenburg Estate which was founded by Dirk Coetsee in 1682 and owned by Stellenbosch University. The stadium is used by both Stellenbosch F.C. and Stellenbosch University. The Coetzenburg is the first Athletics Stadium in South Africa to feature the new state-of-the-art lighting system, which was part of its recent upgrade. The spectator stands accommodate 2900 people and 2100 people can be accommodated on the the embankment. The facility includes nine hockey fields, six cricket fields, nine squash courts, two heated pools, one swimming pool, eight netball courts, fifteen rugby fields with a 17,000-seat stadium and twenty-seven tennis courts. The stadium is wheelchair accessible.

The history of DHL Newlands Stadium/ Newlands Cricket Ground dates back to 1887 when the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) sought a permanent venue. Their search led them to Mariendal Farm, located near the small village of Newlands, just outside Cape Town. At the time, the farm featured wetlands and dense vegetation, making it an unconventional choice for a cricket field. However, the project’s sub-committee recognized the potential of Lot 27 on the farm, envisioning it as an ideal site for their needs. Rugby Interestingly, the Western Province Rugby Union (WPRU) also expressed interest in the same property for its future headquarters. This resulted in a unique sporting arrangement where cricket and rugby grounds were developed side by side. The rugby venue eventually became the renowned Newlands Stadium. Image: Concrete grandstand under construction 1952/53 The DHL Newlands Stadium is the oldest stadium in the country and the second-oldest rugby stadium in the world. The Western Province Football Union and Rugby Union bought the land in 1888. The first official match took place at the Newlands Stadium on May 31, 1890, in front of a crowd of around 2,400. The Villagers were defeated by Stellenbosch in this match. A year later, Newlands Stadium hosted the first international rugby test during the British Lions tour. By 1919, concrete stands had been constructed. The stadium saw several upgrades and expansions through the decades. By the 1970s, it became the headquarters of the South African Rugby Federation. Multiple stands were renovated, and some were newly added. In the 1980s, another 10,253 seats were incorporated, bringing the stadium’s current capacity to 51,900, including some standing areas. Cricket Originally, the land was owned by Jacob Letterstedt, a prominent brewer who acquired it in 1845. Following his death, his daughter, Lydia Vicomtesse de Montmort, managed the estate. In 1887, she agreed to lease part of the land to the WPCC for £50 per year. By 1888, a 25-year lease was formalized, with rent increased to £100 annually—equivalent to over £10,000 today. Support from life members and generous donors enabled the construction of a pavilion, marking the start of the ground’s transformation. Newlands Cricket Ground officially opened on January 2, 1888, with a match between the “Mother Country” and “Colonial Born” teams. Durbanville Racecourse

Horse racing has been staged at Durbanville since around 1898. Races were held partly for recreation but also to finance the accommodation of the hunting club’s dogs. The last amateur Durbanville Gymkhana Club race meet was held in 1955. It was then renamed the Durbanville Turf Club and, finally, the Cape Hunt and Polo Club. It amalgamated with the Milnerton Turf Club under the umbrella of the Cape Turf Club. It is one of two racecourses in the Western Cape and is a left-handed 2000m near oval course, with a run-in of 600m and no straight course. The course adjoins the Durbanville Nature Reserve, a 6-hectare piece of protected land that is host to about 130 species of plants, three of which exist only in Cape Town and 10 that are threatened with extinction. 21 Bowlers Ave Durbanville

The original Greenpoint stadium was built in 1897. It had a banked concrete cycle track, which was sometimes used for motor racing. The lap distance was 586 yards. Within this track, the field was used for athletics. The new stadium was built on part of a golf course; it took 33 months to complete. The present stadium seats 55000 spectators. The facility has 600 toilets, 16 lifts, and 115 entry points. The new stadium is called Inkundla Yezemidlalo YaseKapa, in Xhosa. Afrikaners call it the Kaapstad Stadion. But many simply call it New Green Point Stadium. The open roof was designed for airflow and to allow light inside. The thick glass panels prevent heavy rains and winds from hindering matches or performances. Today, it is used for many sporting and entertainment events. It is equipped with modern corporate hospitality suites, conferencing, and banqueting facilities. The stadium is connected to the Victoria and Alfred waterfront by a new road, Granger Bay Boulevard.
