Garies in Namaqualand is a small agricultural centre at the foot of the Kamiesberg. It began in 1845 when the owner of the farm Goedeverwagting gave some land to the Dutch Reformed church. The town of Garies along the banks of a stream of the same name was originally called Goedeverwagting after the farm it grew up on. The name Garies was chosen by former Cape Premier John X Merriman who took the name from the original Khoisan, “Th’aries” which means “couch grass” which grows beside the local stream.
